Career Moves is a professional development program supporting mid-career workers in their transition to new employment and career opportunities.

There is a $50 fee to apply to the program. After the application, the program is offered free of charge.

The Career Moves program provides one-on-one coaching, self-assessment, skill development, opportunities for work-integrated learning and connecting with employers, and a community of participants. A tuition credit of up to $2,000 is also available to support further education.

Career Moves focuses on career development and soft skills training to empower participants to choose alternative careers, whether through further education or through connections to new industries.

Key aspects of the professional development program:

  • One-on-one career coaching with an actionable transition plan
  • Seminars and workshops to develop skills and prepare for new career opportunities
  • A $2,000 tuition credit for use at NorQuest College or other educational institutions
  • Self-assessment to define potential industries, determine skills, and create career plan
  • Transferable skill development to open opportunities in a variety of industries
  • Work-integrated learning and job shadowing opportunities in all industries
  • Networking opportunities with other participants and prospective employers
  • Individualized assistance with resumes, cover letters, interview preparation

There are three phases of the professional development program:

  1. Professional Exploration:
    • Assess skills and interests
    • Learn about new industries and educational opportunities
    • Work with a career coach to set goals develop a career plan
    • Complete online seminars and workshops to develop skills for success
  2. Professional Development:
    • Access $2000 tuition credit to further education or complete workplace tickets and certificates
    • Participate in an optional one month work experience or job shadows in industries of interest
    • Work with the career coach to develop tailored and effective resumes, cover letters, and interview skills
    • Network with other participants and prospective employers
  3. Professional Reflection:
    • Reflect on development and transition
    • Make decisions about short- and long-term plans

Eligibility

  • Mid-career workers from any industry
  • Willing and motivated to develop a plan and work toward set goals
  • Access to computer and internet- many seminars and workshops will be offered online

Time commitment

  • Complete this program online and part-time based on your schedule
  • Attend regular meetings with a Career Coach, either online or in person at NorQuest’s Edmonton Campus
  • Participants can start this program at any time and must finish by June 30, 2021
  • Commit to approximately two hours per week in order to finish the program in one year
  • To complete this program in less than a year, the time commitment per week would increase accordingly
  • Note: Networking events, work-integrated learning opportunities, and/or job shadows are additional, optional time commitments

Admission requirements

Before applying to the program, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6 or higher in English, if English is not your first language.
  • At least 10 years of work experience
  • You must have an interest in changing fields or industries

Note: The Career Moves program does NOT require academic transcripts for admission. Upon applying, applicants will be required to complete an online questionnaire and attend an in-person or online admissions interview to determine eligibility.
