|ADRP1011 (O)|| Concurrent Disorders |
Examine the relationship between mental health and substance use disorders. Explore the development in policy, education, awareness, assessment and treatment. Specific issues include the relationship of concurrent disorders to trauma, cultural variations in understanding and responding to mental health and substance use issues, and unique needs of various populations.
|ADRP1012|| Pharmacology in Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment |
Learn the effects of pharmacology as it relates to the care of mental health and substance use clients. Attitudes and assumptions relating to pharmacology in treatment will also be explored.
|ADRP1013 (O)|| Substance Use Across the Lifespan |
Explore contributing factors, typical ages of onset, and changes in the prevalence, presentation, course, and assessment and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders across the lifespan. Issues and treatment approaches specific to the various age groups will be examined.
|ADRP1014|| Supportive Counselling Skills |
The course blends theory and practice to integrate communication and interview skills with theoretical models and concepts to provide a framework for client assessment. Through simulation activities, develop a systematic approach to effectively assess and intervene with clients utilizing the Transtheoretical model of change and motivational interviewing.
|ADRP1015|| Advanced Supportive Counselling Skills |
Build upon foundational helping, interviewing, and assessment skills by focusing on approaches most relevant to substance use and mental health fields. Through simulation activities, refine your skills in the use of addiction assessment instruments, Transtheoretical model of change and motivational interviewing, and be introduced to other therapeutic and peer support approaches.

|MHAD1004|| Recovery Practitioner Skills |
Develop knowledge and skills based on evidence-informed practice, guidelines and procedures that are required in the facilitating role of a Mental Health Recovery Practitioner. Develop knowledge and skills for working in a recovery-oriented practice environment with individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use disorders. Emphasis will be on applying knowledge and skills needed for engaging with clients for the purpose of effective identification, assessment, preliminary diagnosis, referral, case planning, treatment and evaluation of client progress. These skills will be practiced in the lab.
|MHAD1005|| Issues and Ethics |
Explore codes of ethics and professional standards from various disciplines within the context of caring for clients with mental health and substance use issues. Consider ways to collaborate on interdisciplinary teams to best support positive client outcomes. Examine rights and supports for client advocacy and self-advocacy.
|MHAD1006 (O)|| Systems Navigation |
Examine the range and variety of public and private resources available to support individuals and families dealing with mental health and substance use issues. The role of worker-as-navigator will be explored along with advocacy methodologies and the challenges of practice in a regularly-changing environment.
|MHAD1007 (O)|| Mental Health First Aid |
This course will provide you with certification from Mental Health First Aid Canada. Learn to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health issues, initiate responses when help is needed and support a person to get appropriate professional help. Find more details at www.mentalhealthfirstaid.ca
|MHAD1008 (O)|| Nonviolent Crisis Intervention |
This course will provide you with certification in nonviolent crisis intervention from the Crisis Prevention Institute (www.crisisprevention.com). Learn physical and nonphysical methods to manage disruptive behaviour and maintain safety for yourself and others. Last-resort skills to use in situations of imminent danger will also be included.
|MHAD1009 (O)|| Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training |
This course will provide you with certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). This training is designed to help participants recognize and assess risk and intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. (www.livingworks.net/programs/asist/).
|MHAD1010|| Community Service Learning |
In this course, students will undertake a project of relevance and benefit to a community program or agency. Projects may include a survey or research project, an educational or preventative campaign, or an administrative services project.
