Do we have access to Turnitin or some other kind of plagiarism detection software?

At this point in time, we are unaware of a software being used College-wide.

The general approach to plagiarism and academic integrity at the College is more educational in nature -  because students have many different levels of experience when doing research, it is important to make sure that they learn the skills to do proper research. Much of the relevant research in academic integrity education points to this approach being more effective than software alone. Knowing the process is key especially if they want to, for example, move to a post-secondary program or not end up with a charge of academic misconduct on their transcript (which would affect any study visas if they are an international student). A recommendation is using the software as an additional tool alongside education in basic research skills, which we provide in the Library.

The Library has many in-house resources to educate students, including Prevent Plagiarismthis page in the Early Learning and Child Care guide, and our  Learn to Research guides.

Some other online resources that you might find useful:

  • Plagiarism Checker
  • Viper
  • QueText
  • Duplichecker

Other reserve items such as phone chargers and white board markers can be borrowed for up to 24 hours.

If you would like to borrow a reserve item, please see us at the Library Service Desk.

What is NEOS and what does it mean to me?

NEOS is a cooperative library consortium consisting of government, hospital, college and university libraries throughout Alberta.

NEOS libraries share their books and other physical resources. Through NEOS, you will have access to an estimated seven million items that you can request to be delivered to the NorQuest library.

Other Questions you may have about NEOS:

What personal information are you collecting?

Personal information extracted consists of:

-name
-address
-phone number
-email
-college identification number (library account number)

The personal information you provide to the college is collected under the authority of Section 33© of the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. It will be used to create your NorQuest Library account.

Why do we have to go through this process?

Because NEOS is a library consortium, and several libraries within the consortium share the same system, the personal information listed above will be shared with library partners within the shared system for the purpose of identity verification in order to facilitate material loan and other library services at NorQuest and partner libraries.

What is the risk to me if I consent to share my personal information?

The risk to you is minimal. It is similar to requesting a public library account. You need to provide your name and contact information and in return, you are granted borrowing privileges. NEOS is no different. Libraries adhere to an ethos of confidentiality; libraries do everything possible to protect the privacy of the people who use their services.

How long will my personal information stay in the NEOS system?

Library accounts are expired when a student withdraws or ends their studies. Accounts are purged from the system two years after expiry unless there are outstanding items or fines charged to the account. When NEOS libraries exit the shared system, only their clients' personal information will be carried over into their new system. If you wish to borrow from a library that has left the shared system, you must visit the library in person to create a new account, or you may place an interlibrary loan request through NorQuest College Library.

What happens if I do not provide consent?

If you do not provide your consent your personal information will not be transferred to the NEOS library system. As a result, you will not be able to place ‘holds’ on NorQuest or non-NorQuest materials.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. You can return to the original email in your MyMail account and select “I agree”. It will take at least 24 hours to update your account.

What do I do if I owe late fees to other NEOS Libraries?

Late fees on any item can be paid by e-Transfer to NorQuest College. Please contact NorQuest College Library at Library@NorQuest.ca for more information.

Fees for lost or damaged items must be paid to the owning library. If you need to pay for a lost or damaged item, please contact the owning NEOS library for payment options.

If you have questions about the fines on your account, please get in touch with NorQuest College Library at Library@NorQuest.ca from your NorQuest e-mail. We understand that there are many reasons you may not be able to pay fines (childcare, illness, self-quarantines, etc.).

Can I borrow books from other libraries?

If you find a book in the catalogue that is not at NorQuest, place a Hold on the book to have it delivered to NorQuest or another NEOS library.

image of place hold text on library catalogue

To place a hold, you will need to have your NEOS Library Barcode & PIN

You will receive a notification when the book arrives.

______

You can also place an interlibrary loan request for books, book chapters, or article requests. Complete this form:  https://norquest.libwizard.com/f/ILL to place an interlibrary loan request.

I am a distance student and need books mailed to me. Can I still do this?

Yes.

If you live outside the Greater Edmonton Area, you may request items from the NorQuest Library to be mailed to you. Items will be shipped via Canada Post with a return label included. This is at no cost to you.

However, Reserve materials are not available for loan. If you are in need of a textbook, they can be purchased online through The Core (NorQuest's bookstore). You can also use Scan on Demand request form to ask for a single chapter of a book.

We also have many eBook options. Please visit our ebook help guide for more information.

Why am I being asked to review a privacy policy when I use OneSearch?

The first time you login to access online library resources through OneSearch, you will be prompted to review a privacy policy. You may also see this prompt the first time you log into EBSCO databases such as EBSCOhost, Business Source Complete, and several others. You may choose to accept EBSCO’s data retention if you would like to create a personalized MyEBSCO account and access EBSCO content from off-campus. It is not necessary to create a personalized MyEBSCO to access online library services, however some content may be unavailable to you if you do not accept EBSCO's data retention policy.
